How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Unplug the unit. Heat pump models contain high-pressure refrigerant; do not open sealed system components.

Procedure:

  • Reset: Disconnect power for 10 minutes and restore. If E7 returns, continue.
  • Check mode operation: Try switching between COOL, HEAT (if equipped), and FAN ONLY. Note which modes trigger E7.
  • Access control and sensor wiring: Remove front cover and control panel. Inspect wiring to any additional sensors used for heat mode (e.g., discharge air sensor).
  • Inspect reversing valve coil (heat pump): From the rear with cabinet removed, locate the reversing valve and its solenoid coil. Check for loose connectors or burnt coil. Replace the reversing valve coil if open or burnt (refrigerant circuit remains sealed).
  • Sensor testing: Test any additional thermistors associated with heat mode per GE specs and replace if out of range.
  • Control board: If hardware checks out, replace the main control board as the likely cause of E7.
