Grease Accumulation and Overheating
Air fryer produces excessive smoke during cooking, especially with fatty foods.
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Excess oil or fat in basket, Grease buildup on heating element and cavity, Using non–air-fryer-safe liners that trap grease, Cooking at too high a temperature for the food
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If heavy smoke appears, stop the cook cycle, unplug the unit, and carefully remove the basket. Keep away from flammable materials.
- Step 1 – Reduce grease: Avoid adding extra oil to already fatty foods. Drain excess fat from the basket mid-cook if necessary.
- Step 2 – Clean thoroughly: Once cool, remove the basket and crisper plate. Wash them with hot, soapy water. Wipe the interior walls and especially the top area around the heating element with a degreasing cleaner safe for appliances.
- Step 3 – Avoid blocking airflow: Do not cover the entire basket bottom with foil or parchment; this traps grease and heat. Use perforated liners designed for air fryers.
- Step 4 – Adjust temperature: For very fatty foods (bacon, sausages), cook at a slightly lower temperature and longer time to reduce splatter and smoke.
- Step 5 – Check drip management: Ensure the basket and drawer are properly assembled so that grease drains away from the heating element.
