Possible Causes
Grease buildup in basket and pan, Oil residue on heating element, Using too much oil, Cooking very fatty foods at high temperature without cleaning
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If heavy smoke appears, unplug the air fryer and carefully slide out the basket to allow smoke to dissipate. Keep the unit away from flammable materials.
Step 1 – Immediate action
- Remove the food and let the unit cool.
- Do not pour water directly into a hot pan with grease; this can cause splattering.
Step 2 – Thorough cleaning
- Wash the basket and pan with hot, soapy water to remove all grease.
- Wipe the interior walls and the area around the heating element with a damp cloth and mild degreaser (unit unplugged and cool).
- Dry all parts completely before reassembly.
Step 3 – Adjust cooking practices
- Use less oil; many foods require no added oil in an air fryer.
- For very fatty foods (e.g., bacon, sausages), consider placing a small amount of water in the bottom of the pan (below the basket) to catch drippings and reduce smoke.
- Clean the basket and pan after each use to prevent buildup.
