Hamilton Beach
Grease Accumulation and Overheating
Air fryer produces excessive smoke during cooking, even with normal foods like fries or chicken.

Possible Causes
Excess oil or marinade in basket, Grease pooled under crisper tray, Dirty heating element with baked-on fat, Cooking at too high a temperature for fatty foods
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If heavy smoke appears, press cancel, unplug the unit, and carefully open windows or use ventilation. Allow the fryer to cool before cleaning.
Steps to reduce smoking:
- 1. Clean thoroughly: Remove the basket and crisper tray. Wash them with hot, soapy water to remove grease. Wipe the interior cavity and heating element area with a damp cloth.
- 2. Remove pooled grease: Check under the crisper tray for pooled oil. Empty and clean this area after each use, especially when cooking fatty foods.
- 3. Adjust cooking method: Reduce cooking temperature by 25–50°F for very fatty foods like bacon or wings. Consider using a lower rack position if your Hamilton Beach model has multiple levels.
- 4. Avoid aerosol sprays: Do not use aerosol cooking sprays directly on the basket; they can leave residues that smoke. Use a small amount of oil brushed or tossed with food instead.
- 5. Check ventilation: Ensure the rear exhaust vents are not blocked so smoke can exit properly.
Note: A small amount of steam or light smoke can be normal, but heavy, continuous smoke indicates excess grease or too high a temperature.
