Possible Causes

Grease buildup on heating element and cavity, Using too much oil on food, Cooking at too high a temperature for fatty foods, Drip tray or pan not cleaned between uses

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If heavy smoke occurs, turn off and unplug the unit. Open windows for ventilation.

Cleaning:

  • Allow the unit to cool completely.
  • Remove the basket and pan; wash them thoroughly with hot, soapy water to remove grease.
  • Wipe the interior, especially the top heater area and mesh screen, with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not spray cleaner directly onto the heater.
  • Remove any grease pools from the bottom of the cavity.

Usage tips:

  • For fatty foods (bacon, sausages, chicken wings), reduce temperature slightly and check frequently.
  • Avoid adding extra oil beyond what is recommended in the T-fal manual.
  • Clean the unit regularly to prevent grease buildup that can smoke or ignite.
