Technivorm Moccamaster
Incorrect Extraction / Water Temperature or Flow Issue
Coffee tastes weak even though brew cycle completes normally
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Boiler not reaching proper brewing temperature, Excessively fast water flow through brew basket, Incorrect grind size (too coarse), Misaligned outlet arm not distributing water evenly
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Normal handling precautions; no internal live parts are accessed for basic checks.
- Check grind and dose: Use a medium grind suitable for drip coffee and follow Moccamaster's recommended coffee-to-water ratio (typically around 60g per liter).
- Verify outlet arm position: Ensure the 9-hole outlet arm (on many models) is correctly positioned over the center of the brew basket and not clogged. Clean the holes with a pin if needed.
- Check brew time: A full pot should brew in about 4–6 minutes depending on model. If it is significantly faster, water may be flowing too quickly due to a stuck-open drip-stop or missing flow restrictor in the outlet arm.
- Temperature check (advanced): Use a food thermometer to measure coffee temperature in the carafe immediately after brewing. It should be around 92–96°C (197–205°F). If much lower, the boiler thermostat may be faulty and require replacement.
