Possible Causes
Too much wood in Cookshack wood box, Wet or green wood chunks, Restricted exhaust vent, Grease buildup igniting in smoker
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If smoke appears unusually thick or dark, be prepared for a possible grease fire. Keep the door closed, turn OFF and unplug the smoker, and have a fire extinguisher ready.
Steps:
- 1. Reduce wood load: Follow Cookshack guidelines for wood quantity (often 2–6 oz). Remove excess wood from the wood box once the smoker is cool.
- 2. Use proper wood: Use seasoned, dry hardwood chunks recommended by Cookshack. Avoid chips, pellets, or resinous woods.
- 3. Check exhaust vent: Ensure the vent is open and not blocked by foil or debris. Clean any creosote buildup.
- 4. Clean interior: Heavy grease buildup on walls and ceiling can contribute to smoke and flare-ups. Scrape and wipe down interior surfaces per the manual.
