Possible Causes
Failed contactor coil, Broken wiring between main PCB and contactor, Faulty contactor driver on main PCB, Mechanical blockage in contactor mechanism
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Always isolate the charger at the main breaker before opening the enclosure. Verify absence of voltage with a meter.
- Step 1 – Listen for contactor: When a charging session is initiated, you should normally hear a click from the contactor. If not, suspect a drive or coil issue.
- Step 2 – Visual inspection: With power OFF, open the charger and locate the main power contactor. Check for burn marks, melted plastic, or mechanical damage.
- Step 3 – Check wiring: Verify that the control wires from the main PCB to the contactor coil are firmly connected. Look for broken conductors or loose push‑on terminals.
- Step 4 – Coil resistance test: With the charger isolated, measure the resistance of the contactor coil using a multimeter. Compare with the value specified by the contactor manufacturer. An open circuit indicates a failed coil.
- Step 5 – PCB output check: A technician can measure the control voltage at the PCB output during a start command. If no voltage is present and the coil is good, the PCB driver is likely faulty.
- When to call a technician: Replacement of the contactor or main PCB should be performed by a qualified EVSE technician.
