Safety first: Turn OFF the charger breaker immediately if you hear buzzing, smell burning, or see smoke.
Steps to try:
- Check current setting: If your GM charger supports adjustable current (via app or DIP switches), confirm it is set to a value compatible with the circuit breaker size (e.g., 32A on a 40A breaker). Reduce the setting and test again.
- Inspect cable and connector: With power OFF, look for melted plastic, burn marks, or soft spots on the cable and J1772 handle. If any are present, discontinue use.
- Test with another GM EV (if available): A vehicle‑side fault is rare but possible. If E05 occurs with multiple vehicles, the charger is at fault.
If E05 recurs at the start of every session even at a reduced current setting, the internal power module or output stage is likely damaged. Do not attempt to open or repair the power electronics; contact a GM‑authorized service provider for module or unit replacement.
