Possible Causes
Grease or food residue on oven bottom or burner, Incorrect rack or pan placement causing spills, New oven burn-off not completed
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure good kitchen ventilation; use the range hood or open a window.
- Initial burn-off (new units): For a new American Range oven, run an empty bake cycle at 400–450°F for 30–60 minutes to burn off manufacturing oils, following the manual.
- Clean interior: Once cool, remove racks and clean heavy grease or spills from the oven bottom, walls, and racks with a non-caustic oven cleaner approved for your finish.
- Check burner area (gas): Remove the bottom panel and clean around the burner. Ensure no foil or liners are blocking airflow.
- Avoid foil on bottom: Do not line the oven bottom with foil; it can trap spills and cause smoke and poor performance.
Note: Persistent smoke after cleaning may indicate a burner or airflow issue requiring service.
