Possible Causes
Spilled food or grease on elements, New oven protective oils burning off, Failing insulation or wiring overheating, Incorrect cookware or foil contact with element
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you see flames, turn off power immediately and keep the door closed. For smoke only, ventilate the room.
- Initial burn-in (new ovens): For a new Bush oven, run an empty cycle at high temperature (e.g., 220–250°C) for 30–60 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues.
- Clean spills: Once cool, remove shelves and clean any burnt-on food or grease from the base, sides, and elements using an oven-safe cleaner.
- Check foil and trays: Ensure foil is not touching elements and that trays are not covering the entire shelf, which can cause overheating.
- Inspect wiring: If a strong burning plastic smell persists, isolate power and inspect internal wiring and insulation for overheating; replace any damaged parts.
