Possible Causes
Heavy grease or food spills on bottom, New oven protective oil burning off, Foil or liners touching elements
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure good kitchen ventilation. If smoke is heavy, turn off the oven and open windows.
- Inspect interior: After cooling, remove racks and check the oven floor and walls for heavy spills or burnt-on grease. Clean with a non-abrasive oven cleaner approved for GE ovens.
- Remove foil/liners: Do not line the oven bottom or racks with foil or aftermarket liners that can trap heat and burn.
- Burn-off new oven: For new GE ovens, run a 1–2 hour bake cycle at 400–450°F empty to burn off manufacturing residues, following the user manual.
