Possible Causes
Food or grease buildup on bottom or elements, Foil covering oven bottom or vents, Failing bake element overheating, Oil or cleaner residue on surfaces
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If smoke is heavy, turn off the oven, open windows, and keep the door closed to smother any flames. Do not use water on grease fires.
- Inspect interior: After cooling, remove racks and check for heavy grease, spills, or food debris on the bottom, walls, and elements. Clean with a non-abrasive oven cleaner following product instructions.
- Remove foil: Do not line the oven bottom or racks with foil, as this can trap heat and cause smoking and damage.
- Check elements: Inspect bake and broil elements for hot spots or flaking. Replace the bake element or broil element if damaged.
- Burn-off cycle: After cleaning, run the oven empty at 400–450°F for 30–60 minutes to burn off remaining residues, with good ventilation.
