Possible Causes
Food or grease spilled on bake element or oven bottom, New oven protective oils burning off, Foil or liners contacting elements, Incorrect cookware causing spillage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If smoke is heavy, turn off the oven, open windows, and avoid breathing fumes. Allow the oven to cool before cleaning.
- Inspect interior: Once cool, remove racks and examine the oven bottom and elements for baked-on spills or foil stuck to surfaces.
- Clean spills: Use a non-abrasive oven cleaner or a baking soda paste to remove grease and food residue from the cavity and elements (if allowed by the manual). Do not immerse elements in water.
- Burn-off new oven: For a new Summit oven, run an empty bake cycle at 400–450°F for 30–60 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues.
- Avoid foil contact: Do not line the oven bottom or racks with foil that can touch elements; this can trap heat and cause smoke.
If smoke persists after thorough cleaning, inspect the elements for damage or consult a technician.
