Possible Causes

Grease or food spills on bottom of oven, Foil covering racks or bottom restricting airflow, Using incorrect cookware or oils at high temperature, New oven protective coatings burning off

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If smoke is heavy, turn off the oven and open windows. Avoid opening the door fully if there is active flame.

  • Inspect interior: Once cool, remove racks and inspect the bottom and sides for heavy grease or food buildup. Clean with a non-abrasive oven cleaner approved for Whirlpool ovens.
  • Avoid foil on bottom: Do not line the oven bottom with foil, as it can trap spills and cause smoking. Use a proper oven liner if allowed by the manual.
  • Burn-off new oven: For a new Whirlpool oven, run a 400–450°F bake cycle for 30–60 minutes empty to burn off manufacturing residues, following the user manual.
  • Check temperature: Verify the oven is not overheating by comparing with an oven thermometer. If significantly high, see temperature calibration procedures.
