Possible Causes
RTD sensor dirty or failing, Controller PID tuning off, Wind or cold ambient conditions, Pellet feed inconsistent due to bridging
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Use heat‑resistant gloves when adjusting components on a warm grill.
- Step 1 – Clean RTD sensor: Wipe grease and soot from the temperature probe with a damp cloth once the grill is cool.
- Step 2 – Protect from wind: Move the grill to a more sheltered location or use a windbreak.
- Step 3 – Stir pellets: During long cooks, occasionally stir pellets in the hopper to prevent bridging and inconsistent feed.
- Step 4 – Compare with external thermometer: Place a secondary thermometer in the cook chamber to verify actual swings.
- Step 5 – Replace RTD or controller: If swings remain excessive, replace the temperature probe / RTD sensor. If still unstable, consider replacing the digital controller.
