Possible Causes

Grease fire in cook chamber, Blocked exhaust stack or chimney cap, Temperature probe coated with heavy grease, Control board high-temp safety threshold reached

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If you suspect a grease fire, keep the lid closed, turn the grill off, and unplug it. Do not open the lid until flames subside. Never use water on a grease fire.

Steps after cool-down:

  • Inspect for grease buildup: Once completely cool, remove grates and drip tray. Check for heavy grease accumulation on the drip tray, in the grease channel, and in the bottom of the barrel.
  • Clean the cook chamber: Scrape and remove grease and food debris. Empty and clean the grease bucket. Ensure the grease drain channel is open.
  • Check exhaust flow: Inspect the chimney and any exhaust ports for obstructions (soot, nests, foil caps). Clean as needed to restore proper airflow.
  • Clean the RTD probe: Wipe the temperature probe with a non-abrasive pad to remove baked-on grease that can cause false high readings.
  • Verify set temperature: Avoid running the grill at maximum temperature with the lid closed for extended periods, especially with fatty foods that drip heavily.
  • Reset and test: Plug the grill back in, clear the error by cycling power, and run at a moderate temperature while monitoring for abnormal temperature spikes.
