Possible Causes

Heavy grease buildup on drip tray and diffuser, Cooking very fatty meats at high temperatures, Drip tray foil incorrectly installed, Firepot overfiring due to controller or fan issues

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: In case of a grease fire, keep the lid closed, unplug the grill, and use a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires if flames escape. Never use water.

  • Do not open lid immediately: Opening the lid during an active grease fire can intensify the flames.
  • After cool-down, clean thoroughly: Once the grill is completely cool, remove grates, drip tray, and diffuser. Scrape and clean all grease from these components and the bottom of the cook chamber.
  • Check drip tray coverage: If using foil, ensure it is applied smoothly and does not create low spots where grease can pool and ignite.
  • Adjust cooking method: For very fatty meats, cook at lower temperatures initially and use drip pans to catch rendered fat.
  • Inspect firepot and fan: Verify the firepot is not overfilled and the fan is not causing excessive flame height. Address any combustion issues before the next cook.
