Possible Causes

Drip tray heavily coated with grease, Grease drain channel or bucket clogged, Cooking at high heat with excessive grease buildup

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do NOT open the lid fully during an active grease fire. Keep the grill plugged in so the fan can run, but turn the temperature dial to SHUT DOWN or OFF. Have a Class B fire extinguisher nearby; never use water on a grease fire.

Immediate actions:

  • Close lid: Keep the lid closed to starve the fire of oxygen.
  • Shut down: Turn the controller to OFF/SHUT DOWN and let the fan complete its cycle.
  • Extinguish if needed: If flames persist or escape the grill, use a fire extinguisher rated for grease fires.

After fire is out and grill is cool:

  • Deep clean: Remove grates, drip tray, and heat baffle. Scrape and clean all grease from the drip tray and interior surfaces.
  • Clear drain: Clean the grease drain channel and ensure the grease bucket is empty and properly hung.
  • Inspect for damage: Check wiring, RTD probe, and paint for heat damage. Replace any melted components such as the grease drain tube or nearby wiring.
  • Prevent recurrence: Line the drip tray with heavy-duty foil (if recommended by Z Grills) and clean regularly, especially after high-fat cooks.
