How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Disconnect electrical power and shut off gas before servicing.

  • Clean the flame sensor: Remove the flame sensor from the burner assembly. Lightly polish the sensing rod with fine steel wool to remove oxidation and soot. Reinstall and ensure it is properly positioned in the burner flame path.
  • Check ground connections: Verify that the burner tray and ignition control board have solid ground connections to the chassis. Tighten any loose screws and clean rusted contact points.
  • Inspect burners: Remove and visually inspect burners for rust flakes, spider webs, or debris that could cause unstable flame. Clean with a soft brush and compressed air.
  • Monitor gas pressure (pro only): If flame appears to light but then drops out, a licensed technician should check inlet and manifold gas pressure against Rheem specifications.
