Possible Causes
Spilled food or grease on elements, New oven protective oils burning off, Foil or plastic left in oven, Faulty wiring insulation overheating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you see flames, turn off the oven and keep the door closed. If smoke is heavy, ventilate the area.
- Initial burn-in: For new ovens, run an empty cycle at 200–220°C (390–430°F) for 30–60 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues.
- Clean spills: Once cool, remove racks and clean any heavy grease or food from the oven floor, walls, and elements using a suitable oven cleaner.
- Check for foreign objects: Ensure no plastic, foil, or packaging remains in the oven.
- Inspect wiring (if smell is electrical): If the smell is sharp and electrical, disconnect power and inspect behind the oven for burnt wiring or components. Replace any damaged wiring or parts.
