Possible Causes

Factory oils on new oven surfaces, Food or grease spills on bottom, Using incorrect cookware or liners, High-fat foods at high temperature

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Ensure good kitchen ventilation; open windows and use the range hood.

  • Initial burn-in: For new JennAir ovens, run an empty bake cycle at 400–450°F for 30–60 minutes to burn off manufacturing residues. Expect some odor and light smoke.
  • Clean spills: Once cool, remove racks and clean the oven bottom and walls with a non-abrasive cleaner to remove grease and food residue.
  • Avoid foil on bottom: Do not line the oven bottom with foil, as this can trap spills and cause smoking and poor heat distribution.
  • Use proper pans: Use deep pans for high-fat foods to prevent overflow onto hot surfaces.
