Possible Causes
Spilled food or grease on oven floor or elements, New oven protective oils burning off, Foil or liners blocking vents and trapping grease, Broiling at too high a rack position
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If smoke is heavy, turn off the oven, open windows, and avoid opening the door fully until smoke subsides to prevent flare-ups.
Steps to check and correct:
- Inspect interior: After cooling, remove racks and inspect the oven floor, walls, and elements for heavy grease or spills.
- Clean thoroughly: Use a non-caustic oven cleaner or a baking soda paste to clean affected areas. Avoid spraying directly on elements; wipe them with a damp cloth only when cool.
- Remove foil liners: Do not line the oven bottom or racks with foil; this can trap grease and block airflow.
- Burn-off cycle: For a new oven, run a 450°F cycle for 30–60 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues.
When to call a technician: If you see flames inside the oven or smell electrical burning (plastic or wiring), turn off power and call for service immediately.
