- Inspect airflow: Ensure the generator enclosure louvers and intake/exhaust openings are not blocked by debris, snow, vegetation, or stored items. Maintain the clearances specified in the Champion installation manual.
- Check cooling fan: With the engine off, visually inspect the engine-mounted cooling fan and shroud. Make sure the fan spins freely by hand and is not broken or obstructed.
- Verify oil level: Low oil can contribute to overheating. Check and correct oil level using the dipstick and recommended oil type.
- Clean enclosure: Remove leaves, dust, and rodent nests from inside the enclosure using a soft brush and vacuum. Do not use high-pressure water inside the generator compartment.
- Inspect temperature sensor wiring: Locate the engine temperature sensor (often threaded into the cylinder head). Check that the connector is secure and the wiring harness is intact.
- Reset and test: Clear the E2 code on the controller and run the unit in MANUAL mode while monitoring temperature. If it overheats again quickly, shut it down and seek service.
Persistent E2 faults after basic cleaning and checks may indicate a failed temperature sensor or internal engine cooling issue, which should be diagnosed by a professional.
