Possible Causes
Faulty engine governor linkage, Sticking throttle plate on carburetor or throttle body, Defective engine speed sensor (magnetic pickup), Control module governor output fault
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the generator, disconnect battery negative, and wait for all moving parts to stop.
- Inspect throttle and governor linkage: Remove the side panel and observe the governor arm and throttle linkage. Ensure nothing is binding, bent, or disconnected. Lubricate pivot points lightly with a non‑gumming lubricant.
- Check throttle plate: With the engine off, move the throttle lever by hand and confirm the throttle plate in the carburetor or throttle body moves smoothly from closed to open. Clean carbon buildup with carburetor cleaner if sticking.
- Inspect speed sensor: Locate the magnetic pickup or RPM sensor near the flywheel. Check the air gap per the service manual and ensure the connector is clean and tight. Replace the sensor if damaged.
- Reset controller: Clear the code by turning the controller OFF, waiting 30 seconds, then turning it back ON. Start the unit with no load and observe RPM. If E04 recurs, stop and have a technician check governor calibration and control module output.
