Safety first: High temperatures used to disinfect can cause scalding. Ensure mixing valves are functional and warn occupants before raising temperatures.

  • Step 1 – Increase temperature temporarily:
    • Raise the hot water setpoint to 60–65 °C for 24 hours to help kill odor-causing bacteria.
  • Step 2 – Run a legionella cycle:
    • If your Nibe model supports it, run a legionella protection cycle according to the manual.
  • Step 3 – Flush hot water lines:
    • Open all hot taps and run water until hot to flush the system.
  • Step 4 – Anode check:
    • Have a technician inspect the magnesium anode; in some cases, replacing it with an alternative anode type can reduce odor.
