Possible Causes

Exhausted ion exchange resin bed, Iron or manganese fouling of resin, Incorrect hardness or capacity settings causing under-regeneration, Channeling in resin bed due to poor distribution

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: No electrical work is required, but if you open plumbing connections, isolate water and relieve pressure first.

  • Test hardness: Use a hardness test kit on water before and after the softener. If both are similar, the softener is not exchanging ions effectively.
  • Check salt level: Ensure there is adequate salt in the brine tank and that a solid salt bridge has not formed (see separate salt bridge entry).
  • Verify settings: Confirm hardness and capacity settings on the Aqua Dial controller match your actual water hardness and model specification.
  • Run manual regeneration: Initiate a full manual regeneration and retest hardness after completion.
  • Resin condition: If hardness remains high, the resin may be fouled or exhausted. Plan to replace the resin with a compatible Aqua Dial resin grade or have a technician perform a resin rebed.
