Controller display shows “Err 1” and valve will not start a regeneration cycle.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power to the softener before opening the valve cover. Shut off the inlet water and place the unit in bypass to avoid leaks or unexpected movement.
Steps to check:
- Inspect the drive motor: Remove the Clack valve cover. Locate the drive motor on the side of the control valve. Check for obvious damage, burnt smell, or loose mounting screws. Try gently turning the main cam gear by hand; it should move with moderate resistance. If it is seized, look for debris or broken plastic teeth.
- Check the cam and piston movement: With power off, verify that the piston and cam assembly are not jammed by resin beads or foreign material. If jammed, remove the cam/piston assembly per Clack service manual and rinse/clean with water. Do not use lubricants other than NSF-approved silicone grease on O-rings.
- Verify wiring: Inspect the motor wiring harness from the motor to the control board. Ensure connectors are fully seated and wires are not pinched or corroded. Reseat the plug on the control board.
- Test motor operation: Restore power with the valve cover still off but keep hands clear. Take the unit out of bypass and initiate a manual regeneration. Observe whether the motor attempts to turn the cam. If the motor hums but does not turn, the motor is likely defective. If there is no response at all, suspect the control board.
- Replace components as needed: If the cam is free but the motor does not run, replace the Clack drive motor. If a new motor does not resolve the error, the Clack electronic control board is likely faulty and should be replaced.
When to call a professional: If you are not comfortable removing the piston/cam assembly or testing live voltage at the motor, contact a qualified water treatment technician.
