Display shows E5 and the compressor does not start or stops shortly after starting.
Safety Warning
This repair may involve working with high voltage components or water connections. Always unplug the appliance before removing any panels.
If you are not confident in your ability to perform this repair safely, we strongly recommend contacting a professional technician.
Possible Causes
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the cooler. The compressor and start components can be hot; allow them to cool before touching. Do not attempt sealed system repairs without proper training and tools.
Steps to address E5:
- 1. Listen for compressor behavior: When powered, does the compressor click on and off rapidly, hum then click, or stay silent? This helps identify start component issues.
- 2. Access the compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower service panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and overload protector.
- 3. Inspect start relay and overload: Remove the plastic cover on the compressor terminals. Check the PTC relay and overload for burn marks, rattling pieces inside, or melted plastic.
- 4. Test components: With power disconnected, remove the relay and overload. Use a multimeter to check continuity through the overload and appropriate resistance through the PTC relay. Replace if open or visibly damaged.
- 5. Replace start components: Install a compatible "STAIGIS compressor start relay and overload kit" for your model. Ensure the connectors are tight and the parts are fully seated on the compressor pins.
- 6. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the cover and rear panel, plug in the unit, and monitor whether the compressor now starts and runs smoothly.
Important: If the compressor still fails to start or trips the overload, the compressor itself or the main control board may be faulty. Sealed system work should be performed by an EPA-certified technician.
