How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the plug or breaker before opening the unit. Sharp metal edges are present; wear cut-resistant gloves.
Steps to address E2 (evaporator thermistor):
- Remove front cover: Take off the front grille and any screws holding the control/coil cover to access the evaporator coil area.
- Locate the evaporator thermistor: It is typically clipped or taped to the evaporator coil tubing near the center or return-air side, with two wires leading back to the control board.
- Check sensor placement: Ensure the thermistor is firmly attached to the coil surface. If it has fallen away, reattach it using the original clip or metal tape so it senses coil temperature correctly.
- Inspect wiring: Look for damaged insulation, corrosion at connectors, or loose plugs at the control board. Reseat the connector.
- Test the thermistor: With power off, disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance. Compare to the Amana service chart (commonly ~10kΩ at 77°F). Replace if open, shorted, or far out of range.
- Check for actual icing: If the coil is frozen, clean the air filter, ensure supply and return vents are not blocked, and verify fan operation. Low airflow can cause freeze protection trips.
- Replace parts as needed: If the thermistor is good and properly mounted but E2 persists, the main control board may be defective and should be replaced.
Do not chip ice off the coil with tools; allow it to thaw naturally to avoid damaging the fins.
