Possible Causes

Restricted airflow across evaporator, dirty air filter, low fan speed due to failing blower motor, low refrigerant charge causing coil freeze

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off and unplug the unit before removing covers. Coils may be icy; place towels to catch meltwater.

Steps to address E5 (low-temp/freeze protection):

  • Check and clean air filter: Remove the front grille and slide out the filter. Wash with mild soap and water, dry completely, and reinstall. A clogged filter is a common cause of coil icing.
  • Inspect evaporator coil: With the front cover off, look at the indoor coil. If it is covered in ice, leave the unit off until all ice melts. Do not use sharp tools to remove ice.
  • Verify indoor fan operation: Turn the unit to fan-only mode and listen for strong airflow. If the blower is weak, noisy, or not running, inspect the blower motor, wheel, and capacitor. Replace any failed components.
  • Check for blocked supply/return: Ensure furniture, curtains, or covers are not blocking the front of the unit or wall sleeve.
  • Re-test: After airflow issues are corrected and the coil is thawed, restart cooling and monitor. If E5 recurs quickly, the system may be low on refrigerant or have a metering device issue, which requires a licensed technician.

Persistent freeze protection faults often indicate a refrigerant problem; do not attempt to add refrigerant without proper certification.
