Possible Causes

Dirty indoor evaporator coil, Dirty or blocked outdoor condenser coil, Low refrigerant charge, Undersized American Standard system for home load

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to both indoor and outdoor units before cleaning coils.

  • Replace air filter: Install a new filter with the correct size and MERV rating. A clogged filter severely reduces cooling performance.
  • Clean indoor coil: Remove the access panel to the evaporator coil. If accessible, gently brush off dust and apply a no-rinse evaporator coil cleaner. Allow it to work per instructions before restoring power.
  • Clean outdoor coil: Clear vegetation and debris around the American Standard condenser. Remove the top grille if needed and rinse the coil from inside out with a garden hose.
  • Check thermostat settings: Ensure the thermostat is set to COOL and the fan is on AUTO. Verify that the setpoint is at least 3–5°F below room temperature.
  • Call a technician if still warm: If cooling is still poor after cleaning and filter replacement, a professional should check refrigerant charge, duct sizing, and system capacity relative to the home.
