Possible Causes
Incorrect thermostat mode or schedule, Miswired thermostat, Faulty thermostat relay, Incompatible thermostat with American Standard system
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the HVAC system before removing the thermostat.
- Verify settings: Ensure the thermostat is set to COOL mode and the setpoint is below room temperature. Check that any schedule is not overriding your setting.
- Check wiring: Remove the thermostat and confirm that R, C, Y, G, and W (if used) are connected per the American Standard wiring diagram.
- Bypass test (advanced): With power off, you can temporarily jumper R to Y and G at the thermostat base to see if the system starts when power is restored. If it does, the thermostat is likely faulty.
- Replace thermostat if needed: Install a compatible thermostat and configure it for your specific American Standard air conditioner or heat pump.
