Possible Causes
Dust burning off electric heat strips (if present), Overheating blower motor, Loose electrical connections, Failing capacitor or contactor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: If you smell a strong burning or melting plastic odor, turn off power to the system immediately at the breaker and do not continue to run it.
- Initial run after long off period: A mild burning dust smell for a few minutes at first use of the season can be normal. If it persists, investigate further.
- Inspect indoor unit wiring: With power off, remove the blower compartment cover and look for discolored wires, melted insulation, or burnt connectors. Tighten any loose connections.
- Check blower motor: Smell near the motor housing. A strong burnt odor or visible smoke indicates a failing motor that should be replaced.
- Outdoor unit check: Inspect the contactor and capacitor for signs of overheating or bulging. Replace any visibly damaged components.
