Possible Causes
Blocked outdoor condenser coil, Failed condenser fan motor, Overcharged R-410A refrigerant charge, Tripped high-pressure switch on American Standard condensing unit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the outdoor condensing unit at the disconnect and breaker. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration system yourself.
- Clean the condenser coil: Remove leaves, grass, and debris from around the American Standard outdoor unit. Remove the top grille if needed (with power off) and gently rinse the coil from inside out using a garden hose. Avoid bending fins.
- Check condenser fan operation: Restore power and set the thermostat to cool. Observe the outdoor fan. If the compressor runs but the fan does not, shut power off again. Inspect the fan blades for obstructions and check if the motor spins freely by hand. A seized motor or swollen dual run capacitor can cause high pressure.
- Reset high-pressure switch: Many American Standard units have a manual reset high-pressure switch near the service valves. With power off, press the reset button if accessible. If it immediately trips again, do not continue resetting.
- Call a professional for refrigerant issues: If the coil is clean and the fan runs but E1 returns, the system may be overcharged or have restricted airflow/refrigerant flow. A licensed HVAC technician must connect gauges and correct the charge.
