Possible Causes
Faulty reversing valve coil, Broken O/B wire between thermostat and outdoor unit, Incorrect thermostat configuration for American Standard heat pump, Defective outdoor control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the system before accessing wiring.
- Verify thermostat settings: In the thermostat installer menu, confirm it is configured for a heat pump system with the correct O/B reversing valve setting for your American Standard model.
- Inspect O/B wiring: Remove the thermostat and check that the O or B terminal wire is secure. At the air handler and outdoor unit, verify the same color wire is connected to the O/B terminal on the control boards.
- Check reversing valve coil: At the outdoor unit, locate the reversing valve solenoid coil. Inspect for broken wires or a loose connector. If the coil is cracked or burnt, it should be replaced.
- Test operation: After correcting wiring, restore power and switch between heat and cool. If E7 persists or the unit will not change modes, the outdoor control board may require professional diagnosis.
