Possible Causes
Dirty condenser or evaporator coils, Low refrigerant due to leak, Failing compressor, Blocked or kinked exhaust hose (portable units)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit before cleaning or opening panels. Refrigerant work must be done by a licensed technician.
Steps to improve cooling:
- Verify mode and settings: Ensure the unit is set to Cool mode, temperature set well below room temperature, and fan speed on Medium or High.
- Clean filter and coils: Remove and wash the air filter. Access the evaporator and condenser coils and gently clean dust and lint from fins.
- Check installation: For window units, confirm there are no large gaps around the unit and that the rear is fully outside. For portable units, ensure the exhaust hose is short, straight, and properly sealed at the window.
- Measure temperature drop: After 10–15 minutes of operation, measure air temperature at the intake and outlet. A healthy system typically shows a 10–20°F drop. If the drop is minimal despite clean coils and good airflow, refrigerant charge or compressor performance may be low.
- Professional service: If cleaning and installation checks do not restore cooling, contact a licensed HVAC technician to check for leaks, test the compressor, and verify refrigerant charge.
