Possible Causes
Blocked condenser airflow, Failing fan motor, Dirty coils, Overheating compressor or control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool before inspection.
Steps to address thermal shutdown:
- Clean coils and filter: Thoroughly clean both evaporator and condenser coils and the air filter.
- Check fans: Confirm both indoor and outdoor fans run continuously when the compressor is on. Replace any weak or non-running fan motor.
- Ventilation: Ensure the rear of the unit is not enclosed or blocked. Portable units must have a properly installed exhaust hose.
- Control board location: Some boards overheat if covered in dust. Gently clean dust from the control box and ensure vents are not blocked.
- Persistent issue: If the unit still overheats and shuts down, a technician should check compressor current draw and internal thermal protectors. Replacement of the compressor or main control board may be required.
