Possible Causes
Failed condenser fan motor, Severely dirty condenser coil, Non-condensables or overcharge in system, Failing compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the outdoor disconnect. The compressor and refrigerant lines can be extremely hot—avoid contact.
Steps:
- 1. Verify condenser fan operation: With power restored and a call for cooling, confirm the fan starts immediately and spins freely. If it hums, starts slowly, or does not run, suspect the fan motor or its capacitor.
- 2. Clean condenser coil thoroughly: Remove top grille and rinse the coil from inside out with water. For heavy buildup, use a non-acidic coil cleaner following label directions. Reassemble after rinsing.
- 3. Check for airflow obstructions: Ensure no covers, shrubs, or fences are blocking discharge air from the top of the unit.
- 4. Allow compressor to cool: Turn system off for at least 1 hour to let the internal overload reset. Then restart and monitor operation.
- 5. If E3 recurs quickly: The system may be overcharged, contaminated, or the compressor may be failing internally. These conditions require professional diagnosis with gauges and amp measurements.
