Possible Causes
Severely clogged filter or return, Blocked or closed supply registers, Dirty blower wheel, Blower motor drawing excessive current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power to the indoor unit before removing panels. Watch for sharp metal edges.
Steps:
- 1. Replace filter: Install a clean filter and ensure it is not collapsing or being sucked into the blower.
- 2. Open registers: Make sure at least 80% of supply registers are fully open. Avoid closing too many registers in unused rooms.
- 3. Inspect return grilles: Vacuum dust buildup from return grilles. Ensure furniture or rugs are not blocking them.
- 4. Clean blower wheel: Remove the blower assembly if accessible. Clean dust and debris from the wheel blades with a brush and vacuum. Reinstall securely.
- 5. Check motor temperature: If the blower motor is extremely hot or has a burnt smell, it may be failing and drawing high current.
- 6. Reset and test: Restore power and run the system. If E8 recurs, have a technician measure motor amperage and static pressure to determine if the motor or duct system is at fault.
