Possible Causes
Failed condenser fan motor, Failed dual run capacitor fan section, Seized fan bearings, Loose or burned fan wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the disconnect. Fan blades can start unexpectedly and cause injury.
Steps:
- 1. Try spinning fan blade: With power off, gently spin the fan blade by hand. If it is stiff or grinding, the motor bearings are failing.
- 2. Inspect capacitor: Locate the dual run capacitor. If it is bulged, leaking oil, or rusted, replace it with an identical µF and voltage rating.
- 3. Check wiring: Ensure all fan motor leads are connected to the correct capacitor terminals and contactor lugs per the wiring diagram.
- 4. Restore power and test: If the fan still does not start but the compressor runs, the motor is likely failed and must be replaced.
- 5. Do not run unit without fan: Operating the compressor without condenser airflow can quickly cause damage.
