Possible Causes
Dirty air filter, Restricted return or supply ducts, Low refrigerant charge, Blower motor running at too low speed
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off cooling mode to allow ice to melt. Place towels or a pan to catch water.
Steps:
- 1. Thaw the coil: Set thermostat to OFF and FAN ON until all ice has melted.
- 2. Replace filter: Install a clean filter and ensure it is not overly restrictive.
- 3. Check airflow: Open all registers and ensure returns are not blocked by furniture or rugs.
- 4. Inspect blower: Confirm the blower wheel is clean and the motor is running at the correct cooling speed (refer to the indoor unit’s wiring diagram).
- 5. If freezing recurs: Low refrigerant or metering device issues are likely. Have a technician check for leaks and proper charge.
