Possible Causes

Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Dirty condenser coil, Dirty indoor evaporator coil, Weak compressor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power before opening any panels. Do not attempt refrigerant charging without proper certification.

Steps:

  • 1. Check filter and airflow: Replace the indoor filter and ensure all supply and return registers are open.
  • 2. Clean outdoor coil: With power off, remove debris and rinse the condenser coil from inside out with a garden hose.
  • 3. Inspect indoor coil: Open the evaporator access panel and visually check for dirt or matting on the coil face. If dirty, have it professionally cleaned.
  • 4. Feel refrigerant lines: In cooling mode, the larger insulated suction line should be cold and sweating; the smaller liquid line should be warm. If both are similar temperature or barely cool, the system may be low on charge.
  • 5. If performance remains poor: A leak, metering device issue, or failing compressor is likely. Schedule a professional to check pressures and superheat/subcooling.
