Possible Causes
Shorted compressor, Shorted condenser fan motor, Incorrect breaker size, Loose or corroded connections causing heat buildup
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker. This is a fire hazard. Turn off the breaker and outdoor disconnect.
Steps:
- 1. Inspect outdoor unit wiring: Look for burned or melted wires at the contactor, compressor, and fan motor.
- 2. Check motor and compressor terminals: Ensure all terminals are tight and not shorted to ground.
- 3. Verify breaker size: Compare the breaker rating to the unit’s nameplate MCA and MOCP. An undersized breaker may nuisance trip.
- 4. Do not bypass safety devices: Never install a larger breaker than specified.
- 5. Professional testing: A technician should perform amp draw and megohm tests on the compressor and motors to identify the failing component.
