Possible Causes

Faulty outdoor coil defrost sensor, Sensor not correctly attached to coil, Defrost control error on outdoor PCB, Excessive ice build-up due to low airflow

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Isolate power before accessing the outdoor unit.

Steps:

  • 1. Inspect outdoor coil: Check for heavy ice build-up on the outdoor coil. If completely iced over, turn off the unit and allow it to thaw naturally.
  • 2. Check defrost sensor: Locate the defrost NTC sensor on the outdoor coil. Ensure it is firmly attached and not displaced.
  • 3. Clean coil and surroundings: Remove debris around the outdoor unit and clean the coil fins to improve airflow.
  • 4. Sensor test: With power off, measure sensor resistance and compare to Baxi specifications. Replace if out of range.

Technician: If sensor is good, the outdoor PCB defrost algorithm may be faulty and require replacement.
