Possible Causes

Open or shorted evaporator thermistor, Thermistor dislodged from evaporator coil, Corroded thermistor connector on main PCB, Failed main control board input for evaporator sensor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Disconnect power before opening the cabinet. Sharp metal edges are present around the coil area; wear cut-resistant gloves.

  • Reset attempt: Unplug the unit for 10 minutes and restart. If E2 returns quickly, proceed with inspection.
  • Locate evaporator sensor: Remove the front cover and air filter. On Black+Decker units, the evaporator thermistor is usually clipped directly to the evaporator coil tubing or fins near the center or side of the coil.
  • Check sensor placement: Ensure the sensor probe is firmly clipped to the coil and not dangling in free air. Re-clip it tightly to the coil if loose.
  • Inspect wiring: Follow the sensor wires back to the main PCB. Look for pinched, cut, or burnt wires, especially where they pass through metal brackets.
  • Test resistance: With the unit unplugged, disconnect the thermistor from the board and measure resistance with a multimeter. Compare to the expected value from the service manual at room temperature. Replace the sensor if it reads open, shorted, or far out of range.
  • Reconnect and test: Install the new evaporator thermistor, secure wiring away from the fan, reassemble the front panel, restore power, and test operation.
  • Board diagnosis: If a known-good sensor still triggers E2, the main control board's sensor circuit is likely defective and the PCB should be replaced by a technician.
