Possible Causes
Blocked condenser airflow causing high current draw, Failing fan motor drawing excessive current, Faulty current-sensing circuit on main PCB, Shorted compressor or wiring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Unplug the unit. High voltage and moving parts are present. Do not attempt live current measurements unless you are trained and equipped.
- Clean filters and coils: Remove and wash the air filter. Access the condenser coil and clean dust and lint from the fins. Ensure the exhaust hose (portable units) is not obstructed.
- Check fan operation: With the unit reassembled, briefly power it on in FAN mode only. Verify that the indoor blower and outdoor/condenser fan (if separate) spin freely and at normal speed. If a fan hums but does not start, the motor may be failing.
- Inspect fan blades: Unplug again and check for obstructions, bent blades, or debris preventing rotation. Clear any blockage.
- Check wiring: Inspect wiring to the fan motor and compressor for signs of burning, melted insulation, or loose connectors. Repair or replace damaged wiring.
- Motor/compressor diagnosis: If E8 recurs immediately when cooling is selected, the compressor or fan motor may be drawing excessive current. Testing winding resistance and insulation should be done by a technician.
- Do not bypass protection: Never bypass overloads or fuses. If E8 persists after cleaning and basic checks, contact a professional for further diagnosis.
