Possible Causes
Failed compressor, Open thermal overload, Failed start or run capacitor, Faulty contactor or wiring to compressor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the outdoor disconnect. Compressors operate at high voltage and can be dangerous.
Steps:
- 1. Listen for compressor: With power on and a call for cooling, listen for a humming or clicking from the compressor. A loud hum then click suggests it is trying to start but failing.
- 2. Inspect capacitor and contactor: With power off, check the dual run capacitor for bulging and the contactor for burnt contacts. Replace as needed (see capacitor entry).
- 3. Check wiring to compressor: Inspect compressor terminals and wires for burns or loose connections. Do not touch terminals directly.
- 4. Professional diagnosis: If the compressor still does not start after capacitor/contact checks, a technician must test windings and possibly install a hard-start kit or replace the compressor.
