Possible Causes

Blocked condenser coil, Failed or open high-pressure switch, Inoperative condenser fan motor, Overcharge or non-condensables in system

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to the outdoor unit at the disconnect and indoor air handler/furnace breaker before touching any wiring or components. Do not open the refrigerant circuit; that requires EPA-certified service.

Step-by-step checks:

  • 1. Verify airflow through the outdoor coil: Remove leaves, plastic bags, and debris from the top and sides of the Bryant condenser. Use a garden hose on low pressure to rinse the coil from inside out (after removing the top grille if safe to do so). Let it dry fully.
  • 2. Confirm condenser fan operation: Restore power and call for cooling. Observe if the outdoor fan starts. If the compressor hums but the fan does not spin, the fan motor or its capacitor may be bad, causing high head pressure and tripping the switch. Shut power off again and inspect the fan motor and dual run capacitor for bulging or burnt terminals.
  • 3. Inspect the high-pressure switch wiring: Locate the high-pressure switch (usually mounted on the liquid line near the compressor). Check for loose or corroded spade connectors. Reseat connectors firmly. Do not bypass the switch for operation; you may temporarily jump it only for diagnostic purposes if you are qualified.
  • 4. Reset lockout: Many Bryant boards will clear code 31 by removing power to the outdoor unit for 30–60 seconds. After cleaning the coil and confirming fan operation, cycle power and re-test.
  • 5. If code 31 returns quickly: This often indicates a refrigerant-side issue (overcharge, non-condensables, or restriction) or a weak fan motor. At this point, contact a licensed HVAC technician to check system pressures and replace the high-pressure switch or fan motor if needed.

When to stop: If the unit trips the breaker, makes loud metallic noises, or the compressor is extremely hot to the touch, disconnect power and call a professional immediately.
