Possible Causes

Low refrigerant charge due to leak, Restricted metering device (TXV) or filter-drier, Failed low-pressure switch, Severely iced indoor evaporator coil

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to both indoor and outdoor units. Do not attempt to add refrigerant or open the sealed system yourself.

Basic homeowner checks:

  • 1. Check air filter and airflow: A clogged return filter or blocked supply/return grilles can cause the evaporator coil to freeze, dropping suction pressure and opening the low-pressure switch. Replace dirty filters and ensure all vents are open.
  • 2. Inspect indoor coil for ice: Remove the access panel on the indoor coil cabinet (if accessible). If you see ice on the copper lines or coil, leave the system off and set the thermostat to Fan Only for 2–4 hours to thaw the coil. Place towels under the air handler if it is in an attic.
  • 3. After thawing, restart: Once fully thawed and filter replaced, restore power and call for cooling. If the unit runs normally and code 32 clears, monitor operation. If icing recurs, there may be a refrigerant or airflow design issue.
  • 4. Inspect low-pressure switch wiring: At the outdoor unit, locate the low-pressure switch on the suction line. With power off, check for loose or corroded connectors. Reseat them firmly.
  • 5. If code 32 persists: This usually indicates low refrigerant charge from a leak or a faulty TXV/filter-drier. These require gauges, leak detection, and brazing. Contact a licensed Bryant technician to locate and repair the leak, replace the low-pressure switch if defective, and properly evacuate and recharge the system.

Do not bypass: Never permanently bypass the low-pressure switch; it protects the compressor from damage.
